Shore Excursions in TRIESTE and surroundings ...

Trieste's setting is particularly beautiful with the combination of the shining whiteness of its rocks, the blue sea and the green hills that surround it. The city appears perfectly inserted in the surrounding territory. Its ancient history can still be seen from the Roman ruins on Capitol Hill, the San Giusto Castle and the Roman theatre.  Memories and images of the past live on in the streets, through the ancient suburbs with their old houses and ruined walls to the wide central streets that cross the new part of the town with its elegant neo-classical buildings.

Their gazes are filled with the innumerable richness of stalactites of various shapes, colours and generations, calcareous sinters and other works of nature art.  Since the middle
of 17th century, the Postojna Cave has been a point of interest for natural scientists and explorers, and  it is also known as the cradle of speleobiology, the science of life in the underworld.

The Redipuglia Memorial.

Excursion #9
REDIPUGLIA and War Museum (3 Hours)

Redipuglia
is located the Italy's largest War Memorial. It  rises from
the western face of the Sei Busi Mountain, not far from the Gulf of Trieste.
During the First World War, this area was bitterly fought over.
The Mont Sei Busi  is not very high, but you can enjoy to have a
beautiful views from its summit.

At the main monument's lowest level stands the resting place of the Duke of Aosta, Commander of the Third Army which fought in this area during the War. The placement gives the impression of the deployment on the battlefield of a great military force with its leader at its head. The Duke, who died in 1931, was laid
here in accordance with his wish to lie amongst his soldiers.
From this level begin rising the terrace containing the remains of the 40.000

known soldiers who fell during the war, and whose names are inscribed in individual plaques of bronze. On the topmost terrace, in two large common graves that flank the votive chapel, lie the remains of 60.000 unknown soldiers. Close by are the graves of 72 sailors, and 56 frontier guards. At the summit of the monument rise three large bronze crosses. Behind the votive chapel is a small War Museum and gift shop and observation deck. Lunch in a typical restaurant. The excursion ends with free time.

Excursion #10
ELETTRA - "The Syncrotron" (4 Hours)

Triest hosts
ELETTRA that is a multidisciplinary Synchrotron Light Laboratory located in Basovizza in the outskirts of Trieste. The AREA Science Park, is open to researchers in diverse basic and applied fields.

The laboratory is equipped with ultra-bright light sources in the spectral range from UV to X-rays and offers a stimulating and competitive environment to researchers from all over the world.

Access to ELETTRA beamlines is possible to scientists coming from all over the world without restrictions: measurement proposals are approved on the base of peer review criterion. They are submitted to a Scientific Review Committee in charge of ranking them and of selecting the most appropriate and scientifically sound ones.

Its mandate is a scientific service to the Italian and international research communities, based on the development and open use of light produced by synchrotron and Free Electron Lasers (FEL) sources. The light is now mainly provided by a third generation electron storage ring, optimised in the VUV and soft-X-ray range, operating between 2.0 and 2.4 GeV, and feeding over 20 light sources in the range from few eV to tens of keV (wavelengths from infrared to X-rays). New fourth generation light sources based on FEL are now in development.
The light is made available through a growing number of beamlines, which feed several measuring stations using many different and complementary measuring techniques ranging from analytical microscopy and microradiography to photolithography. The spectral brightness available on most beamlines is up to 1019 photons/s/mm2/mrad2/0.1%bw and the peak brightness of the FEL sources is expected to go up to 1030 photons/s/mm2/mrad2/0.1%bw. A number of support laboratories help users to prepare the set-up of their materials for best results.

The total operating time of the facility is about 5000 hours/year providing about 75,000 hours of user time on the individual measurement stations. The beamlines and laboratories are open to scientists at national as well as international level for basic and applied research in biology, physics, chemistry, material sciences, medicine and environmental studies.
